Making a chest of drawers is a serious investment of time, materials, and more. Therefore, it’s essential to have a piece of furniture that fits the room in size and shape, and which matches the others in the room. Paul willingly makes a space holder and placeholder from cardboard boxes rather than risk making something the wrong size. Even a scale drawing cannot give the visual impact a model gives you. This first episode covers that, before launching directly into stock preparation, as sizes can be estimated from the cardboard model too. We have panels to make, narrow components, and all the tricks of the trade are woven throughout this episode.

So, when preparing the boards for a panel glue up, do you leave them with the final thickness of the panel? Or do you leave them slightly over, to then plane one face after the glue up, and account for any cup/distortion that may occur when the panel is glued?

I asked Paul and his reply is below:
I can do either and both. I tend to let things float more than if using machines just because there is so much more work by hand planing and thicknessing. If I true up my individual boards and cupping or distortion occurs after glueing up I just work with the wood as is and even force compliance as best I can.
Thanks Paul. Soon I will have my bandsaw operational (need to buy the dust collection still). Trying to get a feeling on how long bandsaw blades last. For this half inch bandsaw blade, did you need more than one for the entirety of this project?

No, a single blade did the whole thing as I recollect.

Why did Paul lay a piece of wood on the floor and stand on it when he was cutting that panel to length?
