I did some more work on the clock today. I had one of those days where everything just seems to click. The Oak has certainly been making me work harder than I’d been prepared for and at times it’s felt like its more granite than timber as the blades skip and skitter over the surface rathern then bite in. Today was different though. I’d been almost dreading raising the centrel panel but I was amazed to find that each swipe of the plane was effortless and when it came to pillowing the panel everything worked like a dream. I can’t remember I had so much sheer joy whilst working on a project than today. I’ve glued the clock up even had time to apply a coat of Garnet shellac this afternoon. I’m really, really happy with the way this project is going.

Hi David, yes, that’s the Pine one in a few of the early photos. I applied a couple of coats of garnet shellac to the pine but to be honest, I wouldn’t do that again. My Pine clock went a bit too yellow and looked like it was covered on goo. The garnet looks wonderful on the Oak but I’d steer clear of it as far as pine goes. I originally got the garnet for my dining table. I fumed it using ammonia which really makes the grain pop but makes the wood go a little bit green in colour. The garnet sent the colour back into the red and gave a nice warm tone to the wood. Up till now, I’ve been buying my shellac flakes from Workshop Heaven but some people on this site have given me some alternative suppliers (you can find them further up in this thread). As far as actually mixing it is concerned, it did a search on YouTube for shellac mixing and then took some notes and made it up as I went along.
Many thanks for everyone’s kind comments. I’ll be sure to take some more photos when it’s finished and post them here. I’m going to my in laws for dinner tomorrow and will be taking a measurement of my Father in law in order to start making him a walking cane so hopefully I’ll be able to start a new build thread soon. I’m also designing a piece for me to keep all my drawing pads and equipment in that will double as a drawing table. I’ve got the design nailed down but I need to work out some actual dimensions next.
Hi David, thanks for the kind words. I got my clock mechanism from Axminster. http://www.axminster.co.uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=Clock
