Thanks very Much Greg
I think the Oak on the star had just enough contrast from the Ash and that Mahogany will shine through.
Just plain Shellack on this I may put quite a few coats on Box. So still a fair bit to do.7 January 2014 at 4:48 pm #25459Looks great Mark How thick is the Veneer , do you buy it as veneer or do you cut it from thicker boards
7 January 2014 at 5:09 pm #25461Mark this is a fantastic project it would make a great watch box just have to buy youself some expensive watch’s to put in it great job mate.
7 January 2014 at 10:10 pm #25470Still not finished and probably will take me a couple more weeks to finish. I do not get a lot of time to play now back at work and long hours.
Jason I will have a stab at anything. I need to get some gouges and moulding planes. Most other stuff I have.
David I cut star the same as Paul’s method made about 1/8″ thick. I then cut a bit over 1/16″ recess on box. I then glued and planed star flush to box face.
That is how I have done inlay work before.
Eddy that is a good call watch box but my £5 plastic strap watches don’t quite cut it. Lol
I suppose I did intend it to be some sort of jewellery box.
Any guys thanks for your kind comments.
I have still got to finish my coffee table.
Then I think my next project will be something with draws.
I have not got room for stool and I do not have a problem with angles and mortise and tenon joint. The seat shaping I may just have to have go at a mock up as a skill building exercise.
I quite like the idea of the plane making.
See what time allows me.
Sorry went of on one there oops.8 January 2014 at 2:23 am #25492The box looks great Mark, I really like the star you added. Congratulations!
26 January 2014 at 7:02 pm #26578Well I have eventually finished My Ash box. 🙂 It took a long time started in October last year.:(
I am just glad not making a living at this. All though I would like to do this all the time. I can dream
I put two sealing coats of shellack and eight coats of shellack on outside of box and three on the inside and tray. Finished with furniture wax.Attachments:

You not only made a box, but you made a box to go in the box, plus the inlay work and the work on the panel in the top etc. I really like it.
26 January 2014 at 9:01 pm #26588Thank you Robert.
Yep there is a fair bit of work it’s not perfect but I like it.
I am sure if I had available time I could do in about a week maybe less.
Then again I am my worst enemy I keep adding features to my designs.
This has been another good skill building exercise. I try and use what technics Paul shows us and incorporate in what I do and try and add my own twist on projects.26 January 2014 at 10:27 pm #26590Thank you Martin.
I suppose I get a little envious of other people seeing them produce projects more often than I do. It is still a joy though seeing what other people are Making. 😉26 January 2014 at 10:51 pm #26591Mark, wow! That box looks fantastic! The joinery, the inlay, the hardware and the finish. All are first rate. Excellent work. Congratulations. We all wish we had more time in the shop. You have made the absolute best of the time you have spent in yours.
26 January 2014 at 11:55 pm #26603That is a very detailed box with a lot of great features. Beautiful work. I like the hardware choices, very nice.
